New Political Comedy Show “Laugh Don't Cry” Debuts in Greenfield

WHAT: Laugh Don’t Cry: A 100% Political Comedy Show

WHEN: Thursday, Sept. 25, 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

WHERE: The LAVA Center, 324 Main St., Greenfield

A new political comedy show is launching at The LAVA Center as part of a recurring series, offering locals a chance to laugh together about the state of the world. “Laugh Don’t Cry: A 100% Political Comedy Show” debuts Thursday, Sept. 25 with two shows at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. (doors open 30 minutes before each show).

The show promises “jokes about how everything’s broken and nobody’s fixing it” and asks questions like “Why can’t we tax rich people? We are pretty sure they can handle it because they are, well, rich” and “Why does Canada get all the good healthcare?” It’s designed “for people who want things to be better.”

The focus is on how to make working people’s lives better, addressing how the current system isn’t delivering and exploring where to look for answers. This isn’t a show for Democrats or Republicans, but rather for people who want better government for working people.

Tickets are sliding scale $5–$20, with reservations not held after 5:55 p.m. for the early show and 7:55 p.m. for the late show.

Organizer Paul Bennett says the show aims to fill a crucial gap in the community. “There is so much stress here. I think many of us who are horrified by what’s happening need to get together and be silly and laugh in order to keep going. There are so many serious things happening that we need to experiment with silly.”

The inaugural shows feature comics and musicians from across Franklin County, promising an “outstanding line-up of both new and used comics.”

“We’ve got sketches. We’ve got musical sets. We’ve got funny stories. We’ve got jokes. We are freakin’ Ed Sullivan," according to co-producer Andrea CK.

Andrea expressed excitement about the experimental venture. “This is an experiment. I know that we all need this. I would go as an audience member or participant. I’m really looking forward to involving locals in making comedy that matters right now.”

The show will feature stand-up comedy, music and variety acts, improv and more. Organizers warn that “this show will sell out” and urge early reservations.

Pre-show tickets are available. For information and reservations, visit https://thelavacenter.org/events/the-comedy-project-revue-2/

MOTHER PLAY: a play in five evictions

through October 5

70 Kemble St, Lenox MA 01240

With a martini in one hand and biting commentary in the other, matriarch Phyllis - headstrong, but resourceful - runs her household with a mix of tough love and theatrical flair, determined to prepare her kids Carl and Martha for the harsh realities of the world whether they like it or not.

As Carl and Martha navigate their own paths, Phyllis remains an ever-present force, doling out brutal honesty, unsolicited wisdom, and the occasional guilt trip with impeccable timing.

Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel, Mother Play is a sharp-witted, darkly comedic exploration of family, identity, and survival spanning four decades, five apartments, and many hardships from cockroach infestations to painful conflicts. It premiered on Broadway just last year, earning four Tony nominations, two Drama Desk Awards, and an Outer Critics Circle Award.

9/27 at 2pm & 7pm, 9/28 at 2pm
1st Congregational Church of Ashfield

Pauline and Devereux Productions' Workshop Production of Seeing Violet by Peter Snoad, Directed by Jeannine Haas

Playing One weekend only Sept. 26-28

Betsy and John, a modern couple in New England, are converting the carriage house at their old manse into an apartment. The renovation unearths a manumission paper for a woman named Violet as well as some human remains.
Who was Violet? What happened to her? Why is her freedom paper in the crawl space under the carriage house? And whose remains were found?
When a young woman arrives to rent the apartment, the mysteries begin to unfold in unexpected ways.
As clues to Violet's life are revealed, the lives of the couple begin to intertwine with hers in frightening and surprising ways. They struggle with this new light on their lives and their relationship. Is history simply stories of the past, or is history alive and present in our relationships and choices?
Betsy and John face these questions as they work their way through revelations of family, responsibility, and love.

Pauline and Devereux Productions are excited to bring this new, relevant play to life in their workshop production. Boston Playwright Peter Snoad will be present, along with the Producers, Director, Actors and Audience, for a Post-Show Discussion on Opening Night (Friday) as well as the Saturday and Sunday Matinees.

Leonardo! A Wonderful Show About a Terrible Monster
Oct 3, 2025 at 6:00 PM
Academy of Music Theatre

Get swept into a whirlwind of imagination as Leonardo! A Wonderful Show About a Terrible Monster brings Mo Willems’ books to life with vibrant puppets, colorful visuals, and playful storytelling. This inventive production by Manual Cinema invites you to see the world through a childlike lens where creativity knows no bounds.

Leonardo is a terrible monster. He tries so hard to be scary, but he just… isn’t. Then Leonardo finds Sam, the most scaredy-cat kid in the world. Will Leonardo finally get to scare the tuna salad out of someone? Or will it be the start of an unlikely friendship? The plot thickens when this pair meets Kerry and Frankenthaler, an even scaredier-cat and her monster friend. Kerry and Sam need to make a big decision: will they just be scaredy cats or can they become friends?

Leonardo! A Wonderful Show About a Terrible Monster uses hundreds of illustrated paper puppets, book pages, two-dimensional props, furry monster puppets, and songs to bring Mo Willems’ books to life. Manual Cinema wanted to re-create the experience of holding one of Mo’s book pages, which are big, bold, colorful, and full of visual rhythm, with a playful use of scale. Like all Manual Cinema productions, you’re invited to watch the big screen like a traditional movie, or to watch the artists below as they create the story in real time. (There is no wrong way to watch the show!)

SHOW DETAILS
Run time is 45 minutes.
For ages 3 and up.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch - A Rock Musical Fundraiser for TransHealth
10/9 - 7pm, 10/12 -1pm and 7pm, 10/14 - 7pm, 10/16 - 7pm, 10/17 - 7pm
The Shea Theater in Turners Falls, Ma.

Arena Civic Theatre is proud to present a raw, rebellious new production of the cult-classic rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Directed by Megan Healey, this stripped-down, amped-up staging doubles as a fundraiser for TransHealth, a Western Massachusetts nonprofit that provides gender-affirming healthcare and support to the trans community.

Performances will take place at the historic Shea Theater in downtown Turners Falls. In a twist worthy of Hedwig herself, the roles of Hedwig and Yitzhak will be alternated between two powerhouse performers - Clay Gregory and Charlie William - each bringing their own fire and vulnerability to the stage.

Fueled by a blistering rock score and razor-sharp wit, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the story of a genderqueer East German rocker navigating heartbreak, identity, and radical self-invention.

This production honors the show’s gritty roots while pushing it into bold new territory/artistically charged, community-driven, and unapologetically queer.

Every member of the cast and crew is donating their time to ensure that 100% of proceeds support TransHealth’s mission of inclusive, life-affirming care.

Celebrating Jewish Plays An Immersive Weekend of Staged Readings

Oct 10, 2025 at 7:00 PM
Oct 12
70 Kemble St, Lenox MA 01240

This fall, Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Mass., introduces the Celebrating Jewish Plays: An Immersive Weekend of Staged Readings, October 10 – 12. Four readings will be staged Friday through Sunday: The Price by Arthur Miller, Sisters Rosenweig by Wendy Wasserstein, Here There Are Blueberries by Moisés Kaufman and Amanda Gronich, and Roz & Ray by Karen Hartman, featuring Tony-nominated actor John Douglas Thompson (The Gilded Age).

The Price, by Arthur Miller, Friday, October 10, 7pm
A brilliant, powerful, and deeply moving play that marked the author’s triumphant return to Broadway, The Price examines – with compassion, humor, and rare insight – the relationship of two long-estranged brothers who meet after many years to dispose of their late father’s belongings.

The Sisters Rosensweig, by Wendy Wasserstein, Saturday, October 11, 2pm
Sara, who lives in London, is a representative for a major Hong Kong bank and is about to turn 54. Her sisters, Gorgeous Teitelbaum and Pfeni Rosensweig, arrive to help celebrate the birthday. Gorgeous is Dr. Gorgeous with a radio-advice program; Pfeni is a world traveler. Various friends and boyfriends also arrive for the party. In particular, Mervyn, a friend of Pfeni’s boyfriend Geoffrey, falls instantly in love with Sara.

Here There Are Blueberries, by Moisés Kaufman and Amanda Gronich, Saturday, October 11, 7pm
In 2007, a mysterious album featuring Nazi-era photographs arrived at the desk of a U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum archivist. As curators unraveled the shocking truth behind the images, the album soon made headlines and ignited a debate that reverberated far beyond the museum walls. Based on real events, Here There Are Blueberries tells the story of these historical photographs, what they reveal about the perpetrators of the Holocaust, and our own humanity.

Roz and Ray, by Karen Hartman, Saturday, October 12, 2pm
Featuring Tony-nominated actor John Douglas Thompson (HBO’s The Gilded Age).
Ray is a devoted single parent with one goal: to keep his twin hemophiliac sons alive. In 1976, this meant endless hospital visits, rigorous testing, and frequent blood transfusions. Then Ray meets Roz – a brilliant doctor who offers a cutting-edge treatment for his boys – and everything clicks; until they both discover the miracle treatment may lead to very dangerous results.

The fee for the workshop series is on a sliding scale $250–400. For more info or to register, email Moo and Hannah at rednosewesternmass@gmail.com.

Double Edge Theatre
Fall Training Intensive
October 10-13

Our method is based on search, not on form. We offer an adventure with space for both wildness and vulnerability.

The unique, holistic methodology employs the artist’s full potential – emotional, imaginative, physical, vocal – to drive ensemble collaboration, individual exploration, and performance creation. The training programs are led by the Ensemble, and take place on the Farm.

Shakespeare & Company’s Center for Actor Training has announced its 2025 line-up of fall weekend intensive workshops, including sessions in New York City, Los Angeles, and at the company’s campus in Lenox, Mass.

Designed for professional actors and theater students who seek an introduction to Shakespeare & Company’s training methods, as well as alumni who wish to refresh and reconnect with the work, Shakespeare & Company’s Weekend Intensives integrate voice, movement, and monologue work. Sheila Bandyopadhyay, director of the Center for Actor Training, explained that Weekend Intensives are a great way for people to attune themselves to their bodies, voices and imaginative impulses in connection to text.

“Our weekend intensives are open to all who are curious about speaking Shakespeare. In addition to seasoned performers, directors, and educators, we often welcome people who love Shakespeare but are new to acting. It’s a welcoming environment,” she said.

Upcoming Weekend Intensives run October through December, including:

  • NYC Weekend Intensive Saturday, Oct. 4 and Sunday, Oct. 5;

  • LA Weekend Intensive, Saturday, Oct. 18 and Sunday, Oct. 19;

  • Lenox Weekend Intensive, Saturday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 9, and

  • A new Alumni Advanced Weekend Intensive, held in New York City, Friday, Dec. 5, through Sunday, Dec. 7

Actors who have completed the Center for Actor Training’s January Month-long Intensive, Summer Shakespeare Intensive (formerly the Summer Training Institute), or Conservatory programs are eligible for a 15% alumni discount on Weekend Intensive tuition. Members of acting unions and of the Shakespeare Theatre Association (STA) are eligible for a 10% discount on tuition. A student discount ($325) is applicable for those currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student, and BIPOC discounts ($325) are available for those who identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color. These discounts may not be combined.

The Lenox Weekend Intensive has single-occupancy dorm-style housing available on the Shakespeare & Company campus for $50 per night. Housing includes a shared kitchen and bathroom; linens are provided.
