What: A FREE reading of a new play, “How to Fold a Fitted Sheet & Other Pandemic Pastimes” by Carmela Lanza-Weil

 When & Where:

Thursday, December 12 @ 6pm at 170 Main Street, Greenfield Community Coop

Saturday, December 14 @ 5:30 pm at Buckland Public Library, 30 Upper Street, Buckland

About the play:

“How to Fold a Fitted Sheet & Other Pandemic Pastimes” explores the experiences of a Medical Reserve Corps Volunteer Coordinator, whose life is turned upside-down by the COVID-19 shutdown and subsequent events. Drawing on journal entries, interviews with older adults living in western Massachusetts, investigative reporting, and public health response documents, the play follows her personal and public journey and the stories of other local residents.

An earlier reading of the play inspired the playwright to rework the story to include new information and ever-changing current events.

The cast includes Carmela Lanza-Weil of Buckland, Jane Barish of Ashfield, and Josh Perlstein of Southampton.  Rebecca Daniels of Turner’s Falls serves as dramaturg and collaborator, and Raymond Lanza-Weil of Buckland is the producer and sounding board.

A guided talkback after each workshop reading will provide an opportunity for audience conversation and insights to inform the further development of the project.

“HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS 2024” COMING TO MAJESTIC THEATER DECEMBER 12-22

West Springfield’s Majestic Theater will present its annual seasonal variety show, “Home for The Holidays,” December 5-22.

The family-friendly show, featuring Pioneer Valley-based performers, has become a tradition at the theater for more than a dozen years.  Similar in style to nostalgic holiday specials of years past headlined by Andy Williams and Perry Como, “Home for The Holidays 2024” will be co-hosted by singer Ray Guillemette, Jr., who has headlined countless "A Ray of Elvis" sold-out shows at the Majestic, and Ben Ashley, a Majestic favorite who has performed in several hit shows including “Mamma Mia” and “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story.”

Joining Ray and Ben onstage will be several veteran Majestic performers, including Kait Rankins, Caelie Flanagan, Tully Russell, Brad Shepard, plus a special appearance by Santa Claus.  Stephen Petit is directing the show, and Aurora Ferraro is assistant director.  Daniel Rist is lighting designer, and Mitch Chakour is musical director.

Tickets are $30 & $28 for adults, and $15 for children 10 and under, and are available by visiting or calling the Majestic Theater Box Office at (413) 747-7797 during its hours of operation (Monday – Friday 10am - 5pm, and Saturday 10am - 1pm).  Tickets can also be purchased online here.

The Majestic is also selling its popular holiday gift packages which consist of gift certificates (redeemable for tickets and café purchases), café gift cards, and a gift item packaged in with the certificates, and they will be available during the holiday season.

The LAVA Center announces Climate Change Theater 2024: “In It Together”

WHAT: Climate Change Theater 2024: “In It Together”

WHEN: Saturday, Dec. 14, 2 p.m. (masks required) and 5 p.m. (masks optional)

WHERE: The LAVA Center, 324 Main St., Greenfield

https://thelavacenter.org/events/climate-change-theater-in-it-together/

https://www.facebook.com/events/586195260555522/

The LAVA Center presents a mixed-media program of short videos and play readings selected from the past six years of plays presented by LAVA on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Masks are required at the 2 p.m. performance and optional at the 5 p.m. performance.

In conjunction with our current Humanities Gallery display, JJ White’s “World on Fire” — which lifts up the work of climate activist Greta Thunberg — The LAVA Center will reprise eight short plays in video and staged readings.

These plays were produced in local venues and online from 2018–2023. The plays come from Climate Change Theatre Action, a worldwide festival of short plays about the climate crisis presented biennially to coincide with the United Nations COP meetings as well as from LAVA’s locally produced climate change theater initiatives. In addition to videos from LAVA’s 2020 online short play festival, which will open the program, six plays will be re-staged by directors Tracy Grammer and Jan Maher.

The production will combine video and live readings, ranging from human protagonists to frogs, polar bears, and Steller sea lions, to natural elements of the ocean and icebergs — representing a fraction of the 140 short climate-themed plays LAVA has brought to Greenfield-area audiences.

The playwrights whose work will be shared are as diverse as the play topics and characters, hailing from Ireland, Rhode Island, Canada, New York City, Jordan, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

the playwrights and their plays:

Elaine Ávila (“The Rookery,” 2019) is an American and Canadian playwright, a co-founder of Climate Change Theatre Action, and a Fulbright Scholar to the Azores, Portugal for 2019. Favorite Best New Play Awards: Disquiet International Literary Program in Lisbon, Victoria Critics Circle, Panama City’s Festival de los Cocos. She is distinguished as a descendentes notáveis (Notable Descendant) for her theater work by the Government of the Azores, Portugal.

Nic Billon (“The Polar Bears,” 2023) writes for theater, television and film. His work has been produced around the world and garnered many awards, including a Governor-General’s Award for Drama, a Canadian Screen Award and a Writers Guild of Canada Screenwriting Award.

Philip Braithwaite (“Ice Flow,” 2019) is a playwright and lecturer. His plays have been produced in New Zealand, Australia, the UK and the US. He is originally from New Zealand, but he is now living, writing and teaching in the UK.

Kay Bullard (“Under the Weather,” 2020) is a Providence-based playwright whose short and one-act plays have been read and produced throughout the region. Her plays have been read and produced throughout New England and a few nationally as well. She is a founding mother of the Providence-based The Blue Cow Group, and was recipient of the first Richard Pacheco Playwrighting Award for her play JUNK at Theatre One's Slice of Life New Works Festival in Providence.

She has written for Irish public service broadcaster RTE’s flagship TV drama series FAIR CITY and written and directed a number of prize-winning short films.  Most recently, her play AND THEN was produced at the Newvember Plays Festival, Dublin, in November of 2024.

Call for Submissions: The Policy Playhouse 2025 Arts Festival

About The Policy Playhouse

The Policy Playhouse is a new arts initiative that seeks to bridge the gap between policymakers and the people they serve. We aim to use the power of art to spark meaningful conversations around critical social and political issues. In March 2025, we’ll host our first arts festival in Northampton, Massachusetts, where local artists and playwrights will present original works that tackle pressing local policy issues. These works will be performed by community members for both the public and local politicians, fostering dialogue and action.

Submission Guidelines

We’re currently seeking playwrights and interdisciplinary artists to submit their play scripts or creative projects for consideration. Your work should address a local policy issue in the Pioneer Valley, but you’re welcome to choose the issue you feel most passionate about. Some suggested topics include:

  • Education: Budget cuts and staff layoffs in Northampton schools (Contact Support Our Schools SOS for more info)

  • Housing: The housing crisis and gentrification in the Pioneer Valley (Contact Springfield No One Leaves for more info)

  • Immigration: ICE’s recent involvement in the area and Northampton/Amherst’s stance on supporting migrants

We accept both original works and adaptations (e.g., Shakespearean plays that are in the public domain). Plays can be any length or format.

Submission Process

  • Completed Scripts: Submit your finalized play manuscript through the provided link.

  • Proposals: If your idea is still in development, you can submit a proposal to collaborate with us in bringing it to life.

Submission Deadline: January 20, 2025.

We also welcome interest forms for those who want to contribute to the festival in a more low-commitment role, such as performance, tech, or volunteering. Interest forms can be submitted on a rolling basis via our website.

How to Submit

We encourage submissions from anyone in the Pioneer Valley, including school students and staff!

Thank you for helping us create a space for art that inspires action and fosters dialogue.
